El Camino de Vélez, pervivencia de una carretera de la España de la Ilustración

Abstract

Durante el reinado de Carlos III, dentro del programa ilustrado de desarrollo de las infraestructuras de transporte como medio de modernización del país, se promovió la construcción de un camino que fuera desde Málaga a la vecina población de Vélez. Su materialización se verificó entre 1787 y 1789, bajo la dirección técnica de ingenieros militares, capaces de proyectar y construir las notables obras de tierra y construcciones auxiliares que incorporaba en su trazado. Durante mucho tiempo fue la principal infraestructura de comunicaciones de la comarca, hasta que fue sustituida por otra carretera más moderna a finales del siglo XIX. Aunque perdió entonces su vigencia, esta infraestructura no desapareció. Hasta nuestros días han llegado buena parte de su trazado y casi todos sus elementos principales. Hoy constituyen un valioso patrimonio de la Historia de la Construcción que se pretende dar a conocer con este artículo.

During the reign of Carlos III, within the Enlightenment program of development of transport infrastructures as a way of modernizing the country , it was promoted the construction of a road from Malaga to the neighbouring town of Vélez. It is, therefore, one of the first modern roads of Spain. Its construction happened between 1787 and 1789, under the technical direction of military engineers able of planning and constructing the notable earthworks and auxiliary structures that the layout incorporated. For almost hundred years it was the main communication infrastructure of the region, until the end of the XIXth Century, when it was replaced with another more modern road. Though its use was then lost, this infrastructure did not disappear. A great number of sections of its structure and most important elements have been preserved until today. Nowadays these sections constitute a valuable heritage of the History of structural engineering. The aim of this paper is giving notice of them.
