There's a certain slant of light: Three attitudes toward the political turn in analytic philosophy

Abstract

Analytic philosophy is increasingly interested in political and social issues. This change has been recently identified as a political turn within the discipline. The aim of this paper is twofold. First, it discusses the very characterization of the political turn. In particular, it introduces the definition proposed by Bordonaba-Plou, Fernández-Castro and Torices, suggests that we should not consider it as a form of activism, and explores an additional benefit of the ideal/non-ideal distinction for characterizing the political turn. Second, it addresses the concern of what attitude we should take in the face of the different sensitivities we might have with respect to what constitutes an injustice. Which philosophical works should count as part of the political turn? We explore three different attitudes towards this dilemma, and favor what we call the revisionist attitude, which emphasizes the fact that our perception of injustices is subject to error.

La filosofía analítica se interesa cada vez más por las cuestiones políticas y sociales. Este cambio se ha identificado recientemente como un giro político dentro de la disciplina. El objetivo de este artículo es doble. En primer lugar, analiza la propia caracterización del giro político. En particular, introduce la definición propuesta por Bordonaba-Plou, Fernández-Castro y Torices, sugiere que no deberíamos considerarlo como una forma de activismo, y explora un beneficio adicional de la distinción ideal/no ideal para caracterizar el giro político. En segundo lugar, aborda la preocupación de qué actitud debemos adoptar ante las diferentes sensibilidades que podemos tener con respecto a lo que constituye una injusticia. ¿Qué obras filosóficas deben considerarse parte del giro político? Exploramos tres actitudes diferentes ante este dilema, y nos inclinamos por lo que llamamos la actitud revisionista, que hace hincapié en el hecho de que nuestra percepción de las injusticias está sujeta a error.
