El relato de Adán y Eva en la General Estoria: entre fuentes latinas y árabes y traducciones gallego-portuguesas

Abstract

Este trabajo aborda el estudio de las fuentes del relato de Adán y Eva que se nos ha transmitido inserto en el capítulo IV (y en parte de los capítulos III y V) de la primera parte de la General Estoria (s. XIII) de Alfonso X el Sabio. Al margen de las fuentes conocidas por los especialistas, se han identificado dos nuevas (una latina y otra árabe) que fueron utilizadas por los colaboradores alfonsíes en la redacción de ciertos pasajes de naturaleza extrabíblica. Por otro lado, la versión castellana se contrasta con las traducciones gallegas y portuguesas que se llevaron a cabo en los siglos XIV y XV. Algunos elementos de la historia de Adán y Eva que aparecen en la crónica alfonsí se contextualizan también con algunos de los testimonios más influyentes del ciclo apócrifo de Adán.

This paper deals with the study of the sources for the story for Adam and Eve that has been transmitted to us in chapter IV (and in part of chapters III and V) of the first part of Alfonso X of Castile’s General Estoria (thirteenth century). Apart from the sources known to specialists, two new sources have been identified (one Latin and the other Arabic), which were used by Alphonsine collaborators in the composition of certain passages of an extra-biblical nature. In addition, the Castilian version is contrasted with the Galician and Portuguese translations that were made in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Some elements of the story of Adam and Eve that appear in Alfonso X’s chronicle are contextualised with some of the most influential testimonies of the apocryphal Adam cycle.
