The conquest of the Sierra Nevada by tourism has been a key aspect in its history. In fact, the development of winter tourism in the Sierra Nevada began with the contribution of the romantic travelers and the first mountaineers that climbed the higher summits in the first place. This early tourism led to the development of buildings necessary to make sport and tourist activities possible. The architecture was essential for all this development. On one hand, new architectural types derived from refuges were designed to serve as elements of protection. On the other hand, groups of these types led to the development of the ski resort that turned the process into a faster and more intrusive one. This paper attempts to analyze the role played by architecture in the development of tourism in the Sierra Nevada mountain range in order to examine its present situation and predict possible development strategies for the future.es_ES
