El viaje transliterario en la novela El verbo J (2018) de Claudia Hernández

Abstract

La novela El verbo J (2018) de la salvadoreña Claudia Hernández, nos presenta la historia de J, nacido en los últimos años de la guerra civil salvadoreña, y luego emigrante en EEUU. Escrita en un estilo indirecto libre, junto con otras formas de experimentación textual que destacan la ambigüedad, la obra despliega una narrativa transgénero y queer. En su viaje, J subvierte las normas del sistema de valores de la sociedad salvadoreña durante la postguerra, mientras transita entre el sur y norte, el género masculino y femenino, y los espacios públicos y privados de distintos grupos sociales. La migración de J, que luego será Jasmine, la sitúa en una diáspora latina y queer, donde encontrará una nueva comunidad. La obra también nos muestra como el autoexilio, provoca que J o Jasmine construya nuevos lazos sociales y familiares.

The novel El verbo J (2018) by the Salvadoran author Claudia Hernández presents the story of J, born in the last years of the Salvadoran civil war, and then an emigrant in the US. Written in a free indirect style, along with other forms of textual experimentation that highlight ambiguity, the work unfolds a transgender and queer narrative. On his journey, J subverts the norms of Salvadoran society during the postwar period, while moving between the south and north, the masculine and feminine gender, and the public and private spaces in different social groups. The migration of J (who will be later Jasmine) places him/her in a queer Latino diaspora, where he/she will find a new community. The novel also shows us how self-exile causes J or Jasmine to build new social and family ties.
