Abstract
Uno de los aspectos centrales de los estudios de la historia social de la
medicina es el del control político y social del ejercicio y práctica de la
medicina. En el ámbito de la Monarquía Hispánica en la Edad Moderna
existió una institución, el Real Tribunal del Protomedicato, creada por los
Reyes Católicos inicialmente para la Corona de Castilla, que fue el marco
institucional desde donde el incipiente Estado Moderno trató de controlar
todo aquello relacionado con el ejercicio y práctica de la medicina, así
como a las personas dedicadas a cualquier tarea relacionada con la sanidad.
Por ello, esta institución se ha convertido en un marco de referencia
obligado para todos aquellos que más o menos directamente se han ocupado
del tema. Aunque, como es lógico, sobre el Protomedicato existen
numerosos trabajos, la imagen global que aportan es muy precaria y, hoy
por hoy, se puede hablar de que no existe una visión de conjunto clara ni
sobre la institución ni sobre su actividad. Ello se debe, fundamentalmente,
como veremos con más detenimiento más adelante, a que los trabajos hasta
ahora realizados al respecto o bien parten de unos objetivos y métodos
superados en la actualidad, o bien se dedican a aspectos o épocas muy
concretas sin aportar gran cosa a una imagen de conjunto.
