La presencia en el mundo. Alianza y reproducción social entre los 'calós' catalanes

Abstract

Los calós catalanes son un grupo gitano que habita en diversas ciudades de Cataluña, País Valenciano, Baleares y Sur de Francia. Su aparente normalidad y adaptación a su entorno es la razón para que otros grupos gitanos los consideren más integrados en la sociedad mayoritaria. Tomando como ejemplo la comunidad de Mataró, en este ensayo enfatizo la cuestión de las alianzas matrimoniales y sostengo que éstas marcan la presencia de los calós en el mundo. Como resultado de la tensión entre el individuo y la sociedad aparece una complejidad en el tipo de estrategias matrimoniales que refleja tanto preferencias culturales como las mismas opciones que las subvierten.

The Catalan "Calos" are a gypsy group that inhabits several cities of Catalonia, País Valenciano, the Balearic Islands, and the South of France. Their apparent normality and adaptation to their environment leads other gypsy groups to consider them more integrated in the society at large. Using the community of Mataró as a case study, this essay considers the question of matrimonial alliances. The hypotheses is that these alliances mark the presence of the "Calos" in the world. From the tension between the individual and the society appears a complexity in the type of matrimonial strategies that reflects cultural preferences as much as the very choices that subvert them.
