This paper explains the historical configuration of contemporary art in Central America based on the institutional changes and transformation that came about in the last decade of the twentieth century. In a similar way it points out the differences between the artistic production of the generation of the nineties in relation to the leading artistic practices in the decade of the eighties and the subsequent shift from a highly pictorial tradition to artistic spheres much more related to participative creation in urban media. Furthermore, it reflects on the influence of violence on the configuration of symbolic imagery and it warns of the danger of the excessive proliferation of the violent image in artistic representation, especially if its use forms part of an agenda that contributes to spectacle and to the arousal of perception through the direct portrayal of violence which depoliticizes the image and contributes little to a critical comprehension of the world. In this sense it is recognized that the «aestheticization» is not confined to the world of art, but extends to other dimensions such as the moral and political, provoking detachment and apathy, or in a other word «anaesthetization».es_ES
