The Life of Lazarillo de Tormes: a Tool for Encouraging Critical Thinking in the Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO)

Abstract

This research analyses to what extent the use of debates on literature and cross-cutting themes presented by means of journalistic texts encourages critical thinking in the compulsory secondary education (ESO), concretely within a sample of 128 participants from third year of the secondary school. Firstly, the study investigates the effectiveness of these debates for the correct establishment of literary knowledge from the chosen book, The Life of Lazarillo de Tormes; secondly, the progression (or regression) of critical thinking among the students. To do so, it has been developed and validated a required tool to measure this critical capacity, taking as a starting point Watson Glaser Critical Thinking Test; even if the test was too complex and ambiguous for the level of the students, the test fulfilled most of the requirements to perform this measurement. That is why it was decided to adapt the structure of this test to a new one, Critical Competence Test (CCT), that allows a test to be carried out to assess the key aspects of critical thinking such as identifying assumptions, evaluating arguments, drawing conclusions, and problem solving. The development of the CCT is of great importance because a short test was obtained, with an approximate duration of ten minutes and an understandable language for any level as it has been formulated on purpose for Spanish speakers. All this to facilitate the study participants to carry out the test and the improvement of critical capacity that is intended to be obtained with this research.

Esta investigación pretende analizar la utilidad de los debates en torno a la literatura y temas transversales presentados a través de textos periodísticos en el desarrollo de la capacidad de pensamiento crítico de alumnado de 3o ESO que conforman una muestra de 128 participantes. Se estudiará la efectividad de estos debates para el correcto asentamiento de conocimientos literarios de la obra elegida para esta investigación, El Lazarillo de Tormes, y también la evolución o ausencia de progreso en relación con la capacidad crítica de los alumnos. Para ello, se ha elaborado y validado una herramienta adecuada para medir esta capacidad a partir del test de Watson Glaser, que resultaba demasiado complejo y ambiguo para el nivel del alumnado escogido, pero que cumplía con la mayoría de requisitos necesarios para llevar a cabo esta medición. Es por eso por lo que se decidió adaptar la estructura de dicho test a uno nuevo, el Test de Competencia Crítica (TCC), que permite realizar una prueba que valora los aspectos clave del pensamiento crítico como el reconocimiento de suposiciones, evaluación de argumentos, deducción de conclusiones y resolución de problemas.

Resulta de gran importancia la elaboración del TCC porque se obtiene un test bastante breve, con una duración aproximada de diez minutos y un lenguaje comprensible para cualquier nivel al haber sido formulado exprofeso para el idioma español. Todo ello con el fin de facilitar a los participantes del estudio la realización de este y la mejora de capacidad crítica que se pretende obtener con la presente investigación.
