In this work, I am interested in the exceptional case of the defenses of the village of Puigcerdà,
which were delivered twice demolished by the French troops, in 1659 and 1678. After the peace of
the Pyrenees of 1659, I analyze the Hispanic politics about the need to reorganize the defense of the
new Catalan military frontier, especially in the Cerdaña country. It is noted how extreme economic
hardships were the main problem to overcome, what led the members of both the Council of the
War and the Council of State, without forgetting the opinion of the officers who served in Catalonia,
to look for alternatives, most unrealistic, to avoid the enormous expense of money that would have
meant to return to build the defenses of Puigcerdà after 1678.
