Judíos en la diplomacia contra el corso norteafricano: el caso de Judá Cohen

Abstract

La apertura de un expediente inquisitorial contra dos chuetas mallorquines que estuvieron en el Mahón inglés precipitó una serie de averiguaciones secretas en esa plaza. A partir de ellas se evidenció que ambos personajes habían tenido contactos con un judío, un embajador holandés que estaba de paso en Menorca y cuyo destino era Argel. La investigación prosopográfica de ese personaje, Judá Cohen, nos pone de relieve la importancia que tuvieron algunos grandes mercaderes judíos como intermediarios en negociaciones y tratados entre las autoridades de Argel y las distintas potencias europeas.

The opening of an inquisitorial file against two Majorcan Chuetas (descendants of Jewish converts) in Mahon during the time of British rule precipitated a series of secret inquiries in that place. These investigations showed that both Chuetas had had contacts with a Jew, a Dutch ambassador who was passing through Menorca on his way to Algiers. The prosopographical study of that personage, Judah Cohen, highlights the importance that some large-scale Jewish merchants had as intermediaries in negotiations and treaties between the authorities in Algiers and the different European powers.
