La modernidad maldita de Nicolás Palacios. Apuntes sobre Raza chilena

Abstract

En este artículo se analiza un libro del médico chileno Nicolás Palacios, que en la última década del siglo XIX publica un opulento libro titulado Raza chilena. Palacios escribe desde ciertas condiciones y supuestos, que hoy son inconcebibles. Este autor personifica para nosotros en primer lugar la ambición de pensar la totalidad desde una perspectiva racista hoy inaceptable. No obstante aunque no suscribimos ninguna de sus tesis, no podemos negar que el libro contiene una hipótesis sin recovecos ni vacíos; una hipótesis totalizadora, poética y retóricamente sólida, prendida por ello de todas las formas de ciencia, historia, biología, sociología, antropología y lingüística de las que se dispone en el Chile de finales del siglo XIX.

This article analyses a book by the Chilean doctor Nicolás Palacios, who published an opulent book entitled The Chilean race in the last decade of the 19th century. Palacios wrote from certain conditions and assumptions that today are inconceivable. This author personifies for us in the first place the ambition to contemplate the totality from a racist perspective that today is unacceptable. Despite that we do not subscribe to any of its theses, we cannot deny that the book contains a hypothesis without empty turns or voids. He offers us a totalizing hypothesis, poetic and rhetorically solid, caught by him from all the forms of science, history, biology, sociology, anthropology and linguistics which were present in Chile at the end of the 19th century.
