El proyecto de crear una fábrica de lonas y jarcias en el Real Hospicio de Granada (1767-1769)

Abstract

A mediados del siglo XVIII se fomentó, siguiendo los presupuestos ilustrados, la creación de hospicios en la Península Ibérica. En ellos se establecieron fábricas en las que los pobres pudieran trabajar y llegar a ser personas útiles y productivas. La mayoría estaban orientadas al sector textil, aunque existen casos particulares, como el del Hospicio de Granada, donde entre 1767 y 1769 se intentó crear una fábrica de jarcias y lonas para comerciar con la Real Armada. En este artículo, profundizamos en dicho proyecto, con el objetivo de analizar el desarrollo de las fábricas del hospicio granadino, así como los motivos que pudieron despertar el interés por estos «productos estratégicos».

In the middle of 18th century, the Spanish Crown promoted, following the en-lightened presuppositions, the creation of hospices. In them, there were factories, where indigents could work and become useful and productive persons. The majority were focus in the textile industry, although there were particular cases, such as Granada’s Hospice. Between 1767 and 1769, the head of the Granadan institition tried to create a canvas and rigging’s factories in order to deal with the Navy. In this paper, we go in depth in the study of that project with the objective of analyse the development of the hospice’s factories and the motives which could awaken interest in this «strategic products».
