La conquista de América: cinco siglos de controversia y una leyenda negra omnipresente

Abstract

La conquista de América suscitó un gran debate sobre su naturaleza, justificación y comportamiento de los conquistadores. La controversia fue planteada por los mismos españoles en el siglo XVI y alcanzó una enorme repercusión en Europa. Una de sus consecuencias fue la aparición de una imagen negativa de lo hispano, que luego se llamó leyenda negra. Hasta nuestros días resulta difícil acercarse al estudio de aquellos hechos sin la interferencia de esta. Por tanto, es pertinente interrogarse sobre los motivos de su constante actualidad a lo largo de los siglos y calibrar los pilares sobre los que se sostiene. La abundante bibliografía disponible en torno al tema revela, por otro lado, el alto grado de polarización en los enfoques y la intensidad del debate historiográfico que acompaña. Este trabajo intenta arrojar alguna luz en torno a esta cuestión. The conquest of America provoked a great debate about its nature, justification and about the behavior of the conquerors. The controversy was presented by the Spaniard themselves in the 16th century and reached a huge impact in Europe. One of its consequences was the appearance of a negative image of the Hispanic, called the black legend. Nowadays it is difficult to approach the study if those events without interference with this. It is therefore pertinent to wonder about the reasons for its constant current over the centuries and calibrate the bases on which it is held. The vast literature on the subject reveals, on the other hand, the high polarization on the approaches and the intensity of the historiographical debate that accompanies. This paper attempts shed light on this matter.
