Dimensiones simbólicas sobre el sistema sexo/género entre los indígenas zapotecas del Istmo de Tehuantepec (México)

Abstract

La interacción social entre géneros se ha ido modificando históricamente, tratándose de un sistema relacional que varía según las coordenadas sociales, económicas o culturales de cada época y espacio concreto. Uno de los territorios insólitos y singulares donde la relación de género es excepcionalmente horizontal, se encuentra en la ciudad indígena zapoteca de Juchitán, ubicada en el Istmo de Tehuantepec (México), donde algunos autores han llegado a afirmar que existe un moderno sistema matriarcal. Con esta propuesta de investigación dentro del ámbito de temáticas en torno al género y la etnicidad en América Latina, se pretende reflexionar sobre las causas que han determinado que entre la sociedad juchiteca la mujer sea protagonista de la vida social, a través de la situación socioeconómica, ideológica y cultural dominante en esta sociedad y que la diversidad sexual se acepte e institucionalice como un "tercer género".

The social interaction between the genders has been in flux historically, as this system of relations varies according to social, economic, and cultural references of each time and place. One of the lesser-known and singular territories where relations between the genders is exceptionally horizontal is in the indigenous Zapatecan city of Juchitán, located on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec (Mexico), where some authors venture to state that there is a modern matriarchal system. With this research proposal within the sphere of themes concerning gender and ethnicity in Latin America, the aim is to reflect on the causes that within Juchitecan society the women are the leaders of social life, through the dominant socio-economic, ideological and cultural situation, and that sexual diversity is accepted and institutionalized as a "third gender".
