Ecos de la llegada a América de los normandos: Cristiano Rafn en el mundo hispánico del siglo XIX

Abstract

En el presente artículo abordamos la importancia de la obra de Carlos Cristiano Rafn, Antiquitates Americanae (1837), para la historiografía en lengua española del siglo XIX, en la que Rafn abrió una nueva era en cuanto a las discusiones sobre la llegada de escandinavos a América en el siglo X. Del mismo modo analizaremos las diferencias en la manera en la que sus traductores, a ambos lados del Atlántico, analizaron y/o criticaron sus novedosas propuestas dentro de un contexto cultural en el que la presencia de Francia y sus Academias había servido como modelo para la literatura culta en español de buena parte de los siglos XVIII y XIX.

This article addresses the importance of Carlos Cristiano Rafn's work Antiquitates Americanae (1837), for the historiography of the Spanish speaking word in the nineteenth century, especially with regard to the way in which this work generated new discussions about the arrival of the Scandinavians in American in the tenth century. The article will also examine the way in which translators of this work on both sides of the Atlantic analysed and/or criticised Rafn's new proposals, from the perspective of a cultural context in which France and its academies had served as a model for Spanish literature for most of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
