La fábrica reutilizada: la contribución de la arqueología de la arquitectura al conocimiento y puesta en valor del patrimonio industrial

Abstract

Las fábricas, que son las estructuras más representativas de la sociedad industrial, han sido modificadas, reconstruidas y ampliadas en innumerables ocasiones a lo largo de su historia, debido a su carácter funcional y adaptativo. Las huellas de estos cambios reflejan las decisiones de los propietarios, los nuevos valores estéticos, o la evolución tecnológica. Los ejemplares que han sobrevivido hasta nuestros días están profundamente amenazados, como consecuencia de la falta de comprensión de los valores de este patrimonio y de la vorágine de renovación urbana actual. Pero este patrimonio, comúnmente infravalorado en la gestión del territorio, contiene historias y conocimientos que, para estar al servicio de la sociedad actual, requieren un estudio y registro sistemático, atento y urgente. Este artículo propone, por tanto, un análisis de la contribución de las herramientas de la arqueología de la arquitectura en los trabajos de arqueología industrial, para la comprensión de las profundas transformaciones de estos objetos en cuatro etapas clave de la vida del edificio: diseño, instalación y uso, abandono, rehabilitación. Por lo tanto, se trata de llamar la atención sobre la pertinencia de este enfoque sobre el patrimonio edificado para su comprensión, documentación, interpretación y puesta en valor durante la fase de levantamiento.

The factory, this eminently representative structure of industrial society, is, due to its functional and adaptive character, altered, rebuilt and added multiple times throughout its history. In this change are engraved the marks that reveal the owners' decisions, the new aesthetic values, or the technological evolution. The specimens that have survived to the present day are now deeply threatened, due to the misunderstanding of the values of this heritage and the bustle of urban renewal that we are going through. But this heritage, often undervalued in territorial management, contains stories and knowledge that, in order to be at the service of today's society, need a systematic, attentive and urgent work of survey and documentation. This article proposes an analysis of the contribution of the tools of building archaeology in the industrial archeology projects, for the understanding of the profound transformations of this object in four key phases of the building's life: design, installation and use, abandonment, and rehabilitation. It seeks to draw attention to the relevance of this approach to built heritage for its understanding, documentation, interpretation and appreciation in the documentation phase.
