La Città del teatro de Giorgio Strehler

Abstract

“Es por eso que he pensado en algo más que un teatro que hace un espectáculo noche tras noche, he pensado en una Città del Teatro en el corazón de Milán. La he pensado para Milán, pero también para Europa.” Giorgio Strehler El concepto de Città del Teatro fue enunciado por el director italiano Giorgio Strehler en los años sesenta, cuando dirigía el Piccolo Teatro de Milán. Ciudad del teatro hacía referencia a la síntesis de arte, técnica, formación cultura y dramática, arquitectura y urbanismo. En un plano material, este concepto se refería a la creación de una serie de equipamientos que ac- tuando de manera conjunta pudiesen materializar esta síntesis. Inicialmente se consideraron diversas localizaciones que fue- ron descartándose hasta llegar a la ubicación definitiva en el quartiere Garibaldi, donde se encontraba el deteriorado Teatro Fossati inaugurado en 1859, que se reestructuró y aprovechan- do la demolición del Istituto Tecnico Schiapparelli se planteó la construcción de un nuevo Piccolo Teatro. La Città del Teatro se articuló en torno a dos propuestas teatra- les diferentes y complementarias: un espacio para la investiga- ción y la experimentación en el que se deberían adoptar dife- rentes tipologías espaciales que permitiesen la mayor flexibili- dad posible y otro a la italiana de mayor capacidad y dotado de la técnica contemporánea. Sin embargo, esta formulación no hacía referencia únicamente al funcionamiento interno del teatro, sino que buscaba tener una incidencia urbana y hacer que la ciudad participase de la creación teatral. Strehler había planteado la construcción de sedes complemen- tarias en París, Madrid y Bonn. Sin embargo, la repercusión más evidente del concepto fue la materializada por Lluís Pas- qual, discípulo de Strehler, en la Ciutat del Teatro de Barcelo- na que engloba el Mercat de les Flors, el Institut del Teatre y el Teatre Lliure, aunque también se puede notar en otros comple- jos teatrales como la Cartoucherie del Bois de Vincennes en París

The concept of Citta del Teatro was enunciated by the Italian director Giorgio Strehler in the sixties, when he led the Piccolo Teatro of Milan. This concept is referred to the synthesis of art, technology, culture and dramatic training, Architecture and Urbanism in several buildings in which this synthesis could be reached. After consider different locations the final one was one on quartiere Garibaldi, where there was an old theater aban- doned, Teatro Fossati from 1859. It was restructured and a new Piccolo Teatro was built on the plot of the Istituto Tecnico Schiapparelli. La Città del Teatro is organized around two different and com- plementary theatrical proposals: a space for research and experimentation and an Italian theater with a higher dimen- sion. However it didn ́t refer only to the inside of the theaters, but sought to have an urban incidence and make the city partic- ipate in the theatrical creation. Strehler wanted to build similar experiences in Paris, Madrid and Bonn. But finally the most obvious impact of the concept was the Ciutat del Teatro under the direction of Lluís Pascual, disciple of Strehler, and includes the Mercat de les Flors, the Institut del Teatre and Teatre Lliure, but also can be seen in other theater complexes as the Cartoucherie in Paris and Schaubühne in Berlin.
