Mujeres y jardines en la China clásica: espacios domésticos en Sueño en el Pabellón Rojo

Abstract

Sueño en el Pabellón Rojo, escrita por Cao Xueqin a mediados del siglo XVIII, ha sido considerada una auténtica enciclopedia en la que se nos presenta un retrato de la alta sociedad de la época. En ella encontramos el Jardín de la Vista Sublime, habitado únicamente por mujeres. La relación del jardín y sus espacios domésticos con los estudios de género y de la mujer no aparece descrita en los textos que circulaban entre los letrados; pero sí en esta novela. Así, con esta comunicación pretendemos presentar el papel de la mujer y de dichos espacios en los jardines privados de las dinastías Ming y Qing, al mismo tiempo que mostramos cómo los personajes femeninos de la obra se funden con el Jardín de la Vista Sublime hasta llegar a ser uno solo.

Dream of the Red Chamber, written by Cao Xueqin in the mid-eighteenth century, has been considered a real encyclopedia in which a detailed portrait of the high society of the time is presented. In this work we find the so-called Grandview Garden, inhabited only by women. The relationship of the garden and its domestic spaces with gender and women’s studies has not been described in the texts that circulated among the literati; however it appears clearly in the novel. Thus, with this communication we seek to present the role of women and these spaces in the private gardens of Ming and Qing dynasties, at the same time as we show how female characters of Dream of the Red Chamber merge with the Grandview Garden until they create a single unit.
