La casa como metáfora del viaje. Fotógrafos y arquitectos en Mallorca

Abstract

Estudio histórico de la valoración y análisis de la casa por parte de diversos fotógrafos, arquitectos e investigadores de ámbito norteamericano que recorrieron Mallorca en la década de 1920, como Arthur Byne, Mildred Stapley Byne, Richard Requa o Ruth Matilda Anderson. Incidimos en las diferencias entre sus fotografías y el nuevo imaginario idealizado del magazine ilustrado. Centramos el texto en dos ejes basados en los trabajos realizados en Mallorca: (a) qué valor adquirió el estudio de la casa local y (b) qué significó su viaje. Nuestra intención es analizar qué espacios fueron de su interés, qué elementos interiores o exteriores observaron, si atendieron a aspectos decorativos o enfatizaron la estructura, si trabajaron el antagonismo entre arquitectura popular, arquitectura de élite y arquitectura de la modernidad, para luego ver cuáles fueron las causas de su visita a las isla, si el turismo y asueto, el encargo laboral o la investigación documental.

Historical study on the appreciation and analysis of the house done by different american photographers, architects and researchers that travelled around Majorca during the 1920’s, such as Arthur Byne, Mildred Stapley Byne, Richard Requa o Ruth Matilda Anderson. We centre on the differences between their photographs and the new idealised imaginary of the illustrated magazine. We focus our text on two axes based upon the works in Majorca: (a) which value acquired the study of the local house and (b) what their travel meant. Our aim is to analyse which domestic spaces interested them, which indoor or outdoor house elements they observed, if they took heed of the decorative repertoire or they emphasised the structure, if they worked the antagonism between vernacular architecture, elite architecture and modern architecture; and to study the causes of their visits to the island –tourism and rest, work commissions or documental research.
