The main aim of this paper is to analyze the aristocracy’s exercise of power in a territory.
Our case study is the relationship between the Marquis of Velez and the Kingdom of Murcia, since
the late 15th century until the end of the 17th century. We have used a wide bibliography, as well as
the documentary collections of several archives. The changes experienced by the Marquis of Velez
are contrasted with other noble houses to stress the changing nobility’s position with respect to the
Royal Court. We have taken in account the inflation of honours (titles of nobility and military orders),
which resulted in a growing new nobility in this period. Finally, we provide some hypothesis about
the formulation and development of this kind of powers in a general frame.
