La casa en Isle of Wight (1955-1956) de James Gowan, austeridad en la modernidad británica

Abstract

El primer proyecto construido por James Gowan (1923-2015) fue una casa unifamiliar aislada con un programa de vivienda y estudio para un pintor y su familia en Isle of Wight, al sur de Reino Unido. El joven Gowan, solucionó la vivienda con un volumen en una planta en forma de hache que le permitió crear patios con distinto nivel de intimidad para los usuarios en función de sus necesidades. Además, la geometría de la planta separaba los espacios de día de los nocturnos. La vivienda mostraba algunas de las características que acompañaron al arquitecto durante toda su obra, como son la simplicidad, la estandarización y la honestidad en los materiales. Asimismo, la predilección hacia los proyectos de vivienda muestra el compromiso del arquitecto con la sociedad y el momento particular que vivía su país.

The first project built by James Gowan (1923-2015), was an detached single family house with a program of house and studio for a painter and his family in Isle of Wight, in the south of the United Kingdom. The young Gowan, solved the house with a volume in one single floor with an H shape that allowed him to create courtyards with a different levels of privacy for the users according to their needs. In addition, the geometry of the plan separated day spaces from those of the night. The house showed some of the characteristics that accompanied the architect throughout his work, such as simplicity, standardization and honesty in the materials. Likewise, his fondness towards housing projects is a sign of the architect's commitment to society and the particular moment that his country was living.
