Antiguos espacios conventuales, nuevos escenarios culturales. Aproximación a su recuperación patrimonial

Abstract

Fruto de su pasado histórico y religioso, España atesora un importante patrimonio conventual de gran valor histórico-artístico que ha aportado y aporta cultura a las ciudades. En pleno siglo XXI, buena parte de estos edificios han perdido su función originaria para adoptar nuevos usos encaminados hacia la vertiente cultural, educacional o del sector servicios. Desde el punto de vista patrimonial, nos encontramos ante un panorama de reúso y refuncionalización de esta tipología arquitectónica, la cual ha experimentado una metamorfosis que provoca una alteración gradual en el conjunto arquitectónico y tejido urbano, convirtiendo así los espacios conventuales en escenarios que albergan grandes eventos que definen la programación cultural de determinadas ciudades. Es el caso del Convento de Santa Clara en Sevilla, actualmente, reutilizado como “Espacio Santa Clara. Instituto de la Cultura y las Artes de Sevilla”, donde se organiza la Bienal de Flamenco y el Festival de Música Antigua (FEMÁS), entre otros. El hecho de celebrarse eventos y festivales en la citada tipología, supone un conocimiento de la identidad cultural y artística de cada región o ciudad, potenciando tanto el turismo cultural como la preservación del patrimonio material e inmaterial, e impulsando así el arte, la cultura y las tradiciones autóctonas. Antiguamente, dichos conventos eran piedra angular de la trama urbana de los pueblos y ciudades, pero hoy en día, los que han sido abandonados por las órdenes religiosas, son espacios urbanos donde acogen, asiduamente, manifestaciones culturales contemporáneas. Es decir, la arquitectura conventual de reúso se transforma en una arquitectura cultural caracteriza-da por la celebración de eventos de gran valía. Este cambio paradigmático se estudiará a partir de ejemplos concretos, donde se analizarán los mecanismos de transformación que convierten el espacio conventual en un escenario cultural, creando de esta manera un vínculo entre cultura y ciudad.

The result of their historical and religious past, Spain accumulates an important monastic heritage of great historical and artistic value that has given and gives culture to cities. In the XXI century, many of these buildings have lost their original function to adopt new applications at the cultural, educational and service sectors. From the standpoint of hereditary, we have a panorama of reuse and re-functioning of this architectural style, which has undergone a metamorphosis that causes a gradual change in the architectural and urban fabric, turning the Conventual Spaces in scenarios that have high events that define the cultural programming of certain cities. This is the case of the Convent of Santa Clara in Sevilla, now reused as "Espacio Santa Clara. Instituto de Cultura y Artes de Sevilla”, where “Bienal de Flamenco” and “Festival de Música Antigua” (FEMAS) are organised, among others. The fact that events and festivals held in that typology is a knowledge of cultural and artistic identity of each region or city, boosting both cultural tourism and the preservation of tangible and intangible heritage, and promoting the arts, culture and native traditions. Formerly, these monasteries were the cornerstone of the urban fabric of towns and cities, but today, those who have been abandoned by the religious orders, are urban areas where, assiduously, contemporary cultural manifestations are celebrated. That is, the convent architecture reuse becomes a cultural architecture characterized by the event of the highest value. This paradigm change will be studied from concrete examples where the transformation mechanisms are analyzed that turn the space convent into a cultural scene, creating a link between culture and city.
