Identidad beréber y arabización: el caso de los ziríes de Granada

Abstract

BERBER IDENTITY AND ARABIZATION. THE CASE OF THE ZIRID GRANADA Abstract The Zirids, as a Beber group that arrived late in al-Andalus, at the beginning of the 11th century, constitute a special case for studying the differences of the Arabization process in the different zones of the Islamic west. Some aspects, as the power of the tribal assembly, the protagonism of the woman, and especially the continuance of personal berber names and the use of the Berber language seem to indicate that these Berbers, coming from a North African environment, were not so arabized as other Berbers seated in the-Andalus from the 8th century. In this article we try to analyze, through the written and archaeological documentation, all the aspects of the Zirid taifa, specially those ones related to the forms of organization of its governing class, from the point of view of the dialectical process of Arabization versus Indentitary
