Abstract

El drenaje del espacio pleural es una técnica invasiva ampliamente extendida dentro del campo de la medicina intensiva, y como toda técnica invasiva no se encuentra exenta de riesgos. Llevada a cabo por primera vez por Hipócrates, es a partir del siglo XX cuando dicha técnica se hace rutinaria para el diagnóstico y tratamiento de aquellas situaciones en las que se produce acúmulo de aire, sangre, líquido o pus en el espacio pleural. Las causas más frecuentes son el traumatismo torácico, el neumotórax espontáneo y el derrame pleural (paraneumónico, postoperatorio, etc). Es importante conocer bien la técnica de inserción y las complicaciones más frecuentes derivadas de ella.

The drainage of the pleural space is an invasive technique widely spread in the intensive care medicine, and as any invasive technique is not free of risks. Carried out for the first time by Hippocrates, it is from the XXth century when this technique becomes routine for diagnosis and treatment of those situations in which there are accumulations of air, blood, fluid or pus in the pleural space. The most frequent etiology will be chest trauma, spontaneous pneumothorax and pleural effusion (parapneumonic, postoperative, etc). It is important to know the technique of insertion and the most frequent complications derived from it.
