El fracaso de Latinoamérica

Abstract

América Latina es una civilización fracasada o fallida, si la comparamos con las civilizaciones china o india, que han permanecido con su particular idiosincrasia durante siglos y hoy continúan teniendo una fisonomía identitaria reconocible y un desarrollo demográfico y económico que va en alza. El fracaso y la diferencia con civilizaciones asentadas se ha visto sobre todo desde el término de la Segunda Guerra Mundial hasta ahora, y puede observarse en siete temas fundamentales: la cuestión de la colonialidad, el papel de los Estados Unidos, el catolicismo, el Barroco como significante cultural de América Latina, el socialismo, el Estado-nación y la comunidad hispana o latina en los Estados Unidos.

Latin America is a failed civilization. Failed in relation to what? Failed in relation to China and India in particular, in the period that extends from the end of World War two to the present. If in 1945, Latin America as a whole, especially Brazil, Argentina and the Southern Cone, and Mexico, was somewhat ahead of China and India, it is now clearly behind, in terms of demographic and economic growth, on the one hand, and status or influence in the world, on the other. This failure can be observed in seven topics: the question of coloniality, the role of the United States, Catholicism, the Baroque as a cultural signifier for Latin America, the nation-state, Socialism, and the Hispanic or Latino community in the United States.
