Tapas verde jade: Borges y la materialidad imaginaria del libro

Abstract

El artículo aborda problemas vinculados a la materialidad y visualidad de los textos en la literatura borgeana. Se trata de una dimensión presente no sólo en las experiencias de Borges como lector sino también como escritor y director de revistas y colecciones. A partir de 1921 fue parte activa del mundo editorial en expansión donde la literatura adquiría cuerpo visible y tangible. Algunas de sus ficciones tematizan –y resuelven imaginariamente– los conflictos derivados de ese contacto. Al hacerlo, interrogan algunas de las certezas no sólo del sentido común sino también de la bibliografía material y la sociología de los textos: en particular aquella que afirma que después de la escritura literaria las formas materiales y visuales transforman los textos y producen sentido.

This article addresses problems related to the materiality and visuality of texts in Borges’ literature. This dimension is present not only in Borges’ experiences as a reader but also as a writer and as a director of periodicals and book collections. From 1921 on he was active in the publishing world where literature acquired a visible and tangible body. Some of his fictions thematize − and find an imaginary solution to− the conflicts derived from that contact. In doing so, they question some of the certainties of common sense and they also deal with the scope of some ideas of the material bibliography and sociology of texts: in particular, the one that states that material and visual forms transform texts and produce meaning after literary writing.
