Juan de Ribera, las comunidades de Castilla y los pleitos de sus sucesores en el marquesado de Montemayor en el siglo XVI

Abstract

Juan de Ribera o Juan de Silva y Ribera como después de las Comunidades de Castilla será más conocido, representa un modelo de nobleza, titular de un señorío, que sabrá sacar partido de la fidelidad mostrada a la causa imperial. Poniendo sus armas y vasallos al servicio del Emperador Carlos en los años turbulentos de 1520-1521 obtendrá importantes réditos hasta conseguir el título de Marqués de Montemayor, gracias al favor real. A partir de aquí, el sostenimiento del prestigio de la Casa y Estado, las dificultades económicas inherentes al mantenimiento de su estatus social y económico y las, en ocasiones, tensas relaciones con los regimientos y vecinos de su jurisdicción, le obligarán a soportar innumerables pleitos y concurrir ante diferentes tribunales de justicia.

Juan de Ribera or Juan de Silva and Ribera —as he will be called after the Castilian Communities had established— represents a new nobility model. Being a Lordship owner, he will be able to capitalize the fidelity shown to the imperial rule. Furhermore, he places vassals and weapons at Charles Emperor’s service during the years 1520-1521s and gained important political advantage until, thanked to the Royal Favour, he was granted the title of Marquis of Montemayor. Since then, keeping his State and Household reputation as well as tackling the economic difficulties associated with the maintenance of his social and economic status will be his main goals that, together with the maintenance of his relationship with the regiments and neighbors of his jurisdiction will make him undergo numerous lawsuits and appeal the Court of Justice.
