De Duque de Gandía a santo: La transformación de San Francisco de Borja a través de sus biografías

Abstract

La vida de Francisco de Borja ha concitado un interés especial por la riqueza de facetas, funciones, cargos y dignidades que se acumularon en la misma. La evolución del proceso de canonización, culminado en 1671, favoreció que sus biógrafos buscasen y encontrasen sin demasiada dificultad los aspectos que estimaron conveniente significar en cada momento con un objetivo utilitarista. Desde que se produjo su fallecimiento, sobre la figura de Borja se entrelazaron perspectivas e intereses, que no siempre fueron coincidentes, vinculados a cuestiones internas de la Compañía de Jesús, a las relaciones entre los monarcas hispanos y los pontífices, así como a la propia familia Borja y, concretamente, a la Casa de Gandía. La evolución de los rasgos destacados en sus biografías permite analizar la ilación entre los mismos.

The life of Francis Borgia has aroused a special interest in the richness of facets, functions, positions and dignities that accumulated in the same. The evolution of the process of canonization, culminated in 1671, favored that his biographers sought and find without too much difficulty the aspects that they considered convenient to mean at any moment with a utilitarian objective. From the time of his death, on the figure of Borja were interwoven perspectives and interests, which were not always coincident, linked to internal issues of the Society of Jesus, to the relations between the Hispanic monarchs and the pontiffs, as well as to the own Family Borja and, specifically, the House of Gandía. The evolution of the features highlighted in their biographies allows to analyze the relationship between them.
