Film and television have often represented male sex-workers, albeit not always conforming to the reality of the profession. This project attempts to identify the stereotypes around sex-workers shown by the media: those performing their profession with other men and, to a lesser extent, those carrying it out with women. In addition, the study seeks to verify, first, the validity of these stereotypes and, second, whether incorporation of the gay subculture and normative homosexuality into the hegemonic social discourse has changed the way the screen portrays the male sex-worker. By means of a qualitative methodology, the content analysis around the audiovisual representation of sex-workers in the filmography of western democracies between 1957 and 2017, using 32 audiovisual texts within a frame of three hundred, was performed seeking the potential stigmatising character that these representations mean to this collective. The conclusions reveal the permanence of both stereotypes and male sex work in the private sphere represented by means of film genres such as drama and melodrama, without being introduced in the social and political space, and maintaining the social norms that stigmatise sex-workers as victims, guilty and maladjusted, incapable of themselves becoming political and social subjects and, therefore, without having the power to determine their own destiny.es_ES
