Raw material (survey results) corresponding to the article "They usually just say what they think". Intercultural competence of young Spanish migrants in Germany. The article examines the specific intercultural competence of young Spanish migrants in Germany. While the acquisition of lexical and grammatical skills in this group is generally satisfactory, the acquisition of specific intercultural competence is still causing considerable difficulties in some areas. In the present empirical study, we focus on the areas of relative directness in communication in German, as opposed to Spanish, and the relative reservedness. The results of several group discussions and a survey of 171 participants show that, at least occasionally, both areas are problematic for a large proportion of informants. It is therefore suggested that these specific areas be explicitly addressed in language teaching. In this context, it should be made clear that the relative directness and reservedness in German communication are culture-specific features of the communication style, based on a culture-specific understanding of politeness rather than a characteristic of the Germans themselves. This knowledge should facilitate the acquisition of specific intercultural competence considerably and thus foster integration.
