La muerte y sus representaciones en México. Perspectivas de enfermeras maestras

Abstract

FUNDAMENTO: En la sociedad mexicana y en particular entre los profesionales que ense-ñan la enfermería se da un doble discurso sobre la muerte: la que considera su origen patológico y por tanto susceptible de tratarse institucionalmente, y la que se basa en el imaginario colectivo del mexicano, que incorpora concepciones cristianas con una cos-movisión de origen precolombino. OBJETIVO: constatar el marco de referencia cultural que utilizan las docentes de enferme-ría en su discurso cotidiano, intentando responder a la pregunta ¿de qué hablan las maes-tras cuando se les pregunta sobre la muerte?. DISEÑO: Estudio cualitativo de carácter descriptivo mediante relatos biográficos realiza-do en la Escuela Nacional de Enfermería y Obstetricia de la Universidad Nacional Autó-noma de México. PARTICIPANTES y obtención de datos: nueve maestras de procedencias diferentes dentro de los estados del país que aportaron un relato escrito u oral de una vivencia sobre la muerte considerada importante en su vida. ANÁLISIS: de tipo descriptivo del contenido de los relatos, obteniéndose tres categorías principales: descripción de costumbres sobre la muerte, expresión de su imaginario cultural y el fenómeno de la transmisión de conocimientos. CONCLUSIONES: en el discurso de las maestras se anteponen las concepciones obtenidas de su particularismo cultural a las aportadas por el contexto biomédico en las que se hayan inmersas. Su pervivencia se entiende debido a la importancia que otorgan a la transmisión de los saberes tradicionales.

FUNDAMENT: In the Mexican society, and especially among the professionals teaching nursing studies, there is a double discourse concerning death. The first approach is the one that considers it from a pathological perspective and tries to institutionalize its treatment. On the other hand, the second approach is based in the collective imaginary, and incorporates the Christian conception and the pre-Columbian cosmovision. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to check the cultural reference frame used by the nursing professionals in their daily discourse. The question asked was: What do professors answer when asked about death? DESIGN: It is a qualitative and descriptive study. The information obtained comes from biographic interviews that took place in the National School of Nursing and Obstetrics in the Universidad Nacional Autónoma in Mexico. PARTICIPANTS and data gathering: Nine professors coming from different parts of the country participated in this study. They contributed with a written or oral story of an experience about death that they considered important in their lives. ANALYSIS: Description of the content of the stories structuring them in three main cate-gories: description about death customs, the expression of their cultural imaginary and the phenomena of knowledge transfer. CONCLUSIONS: in the professor’s speech, the cultural traditions of the person were more present than the biomedical context in which they live. The survival of these tradi-tions is still present due to the importance that they give to traditional knowledge.
