Abstract

Antonio Ponz se interesó por la cuestión religiosa durante su visita a Inglaterra en 1783. No se tomó en serio la libertad de cultos ya que las leyes inglesas discriminaban a los católicos. No supo entender las razones de esa antipatía popular hacia una minoría que no resultaba peligrosa. Algunos de sus comentarios y opiniones sobre las imágenes de las iglesias hacen pensar que no estaba preparado para entender el catolicismo inglés

Antonio Ponz became interested in the religious question during his visit to England in 1783. He did not take the question of the freedom of worship seriously due to the fact that English laws discriminated against the Catholics. He failed to understand the reasons for that popular antipathy towards a minority which was not inherently dangerous. Some of his comments and opinions about the images in the churches make think that he was not qualified to understand English Catholicism
