La fiesta religiosa en la diócesis de Granada (1750-1825): Opinión, control y represión

Abstract

Las manifestaciones de la religiosidad popular suponían una forma peculiar de vivir la religión, con acentuadas costumbres locales y ancestrales. En general, la sociedad del Antiguo Régimen, todos sus cuerpos y estamentos, participaba en esas manifestaciones. Pero siempre contaron con una oposición más o menos abierta por parte de las autori­ dades. La Iglesia trataba de erradicar en ella los elementos profanos. El Estado quiso limitar sus dispendios económicos y su peligrosidad para el orden público. Estas actitu­ des se acentuaron en la diócesis de Granada, como en toda España, en el siglo XVIII .

Demonstrations of popular religiosity reflected a peculiar way of experiencing religion, with particular local and ancestral habits. The society of the Ancient Regime and all of its legislative bodies, participated generally in such manifestations. Nevertheless, the official authorities generally opposed such demonstrations. The church tried to stop the profane elements. The State wanted to limit the expenses and the danger caused to the public order. Such attitudes were especially strong in the diocese of Granada and in the rest of Spain, in the 18th century.
