El servicio militar en España durante el siglo XVII

Abstract

El siglo XVII se produjo en España un giro decisivo en la política militar al pasarse del predominio del reclutamiento centralizado y voluntario a un nuevo sistema más diversificado, descentralizado y obligatorio. Dicho cambio tuvo tal alcance histórico, que determinó la evolución del modelo de los tercios de infantería española (ejército profe­ sional, mercenario y voluntario) al modelo de ejército-milicia, basado en la combinación de tropas regulares y de milicias. Mi intención consiste en analizar aquí algunas de las claves del servicio militar y de los métodos de reclutamiento del siglo XVII : el alistamien­ to de voluntarios como continuación del sistema tradicional del siglo XVI y el recluta­ miento que se hacía por medio de la nobleza y de los municipios

A decisive turn took place in the military policy of Spain in the seventeenth century: a change from the prevalence of centralized and volunteer recruitment to a more diversified one noncentralized and obligatory. The aforementioned turn was a very important historical event because it determinated the evolution of the model of the spanish infantry regiment (profesional army, mercenary and voluntier) towards an army-military, based on the combination of regular troops and militias. I intend to analyze some of the clues of the military service and recruitment methods of the XVII th century: the traditional one, XVI th century and the recruitment made through nobelmen and municipalities
