La creación de la Universidad de Guadalajara. Ilustración y conciencia regional

Abstract

Desde principios del siglo XVIII se realizan gestiones para fundar una universidad en la ciudad de Guadalajara (México). La expulsión de los jesuitas en 1767 acelera el proceso. Desde Guadalajara se contempla la creación de esta universidad como una necesidad educativa para la región, pero también como una posibilidad de conseguir una mayor independencia respecto de la ciudad de México. Todo ello coincide con los intentos de reforma universitaria iniciados por los Borbones en España en un sentido ilustrado y centralizador, que tendrá su influencia en algunos aspectos del proyecto (asignaturas, estatutos, gestión). Desde el virreinato y las autoridades institucionales tapatías (Obispado, Cabildo de la ciudad, Audiencia) se emiten diversos informes favorables, sólo contestados por la Universidad de Ciudad de México, en los que se aportan detalles sobre financiación, planes de estudios e infraestructura de la futura universidad. Finalmente, Carlos IV da su aprobación al proyecto en noviembre de 1791, y al año siguiente se celebra la ceremonia de apertura de la Real y Literaria Universidad de Guadalajara.

From the begining of the XVIII century steps were carried out in order to establish an university in the city of Guadalajara (México). The expulsión of the jesuits in 1767 accelerated the process. The creation of this University was seen not only as an educational need in the region, but also as an opportunity to achieve greater independence from the Mexico City. All point of view, which were started by the Borbons in Spain, which would subsequently infuence some aspects of the project (subjects, statutes, management). The viceroyalty and the institucional authorities “tapatías” (Bishopric, Town Council and “Audiencia”) published several favorable report, concerning details of financy, curricula and infraestructure of the forthcoming university, being the University of Mexico City the only that disagree with this project. Finally in November of 1791, Charles IV give his approval of the project and the following year the opening ceremony of the “Real y Literaria Universidad” of Guadalajara was held
