Por la reflexión moral, contra los códigos de ética en el Trabajo Social

Abstract

En este artículo argumento, en primer lugar, que la filosofía moral puede ayudar a los trabajadores sociales a enriquecer la reflexión sobre su práctica y a refinar sus criterios cuando han de escoger su propio estilo de actuación profesional. Sin embargo, también argumento que los códigos de ética profesional no contribuyen adecuadamente a esos fines, y que otros beneficios, generalmente atribuidos a dichos códigos, como el fortalecimiento de la identidad y el prestigio profesionales, se conseguirían mejor mediante otro tipo de documentos que recogieran los posicionamientos políticos mayoritarios de la profesión, en un momento y lugar determinados. La base teórica para defender estas tesis la proporcionan la crítica de Bernard Williams al moralismo político —entendido como la pretensión de subordinar la política a fines y criterios morales— y mi propia propuesta del minimalismo político, que incorpora la concepción de las relaciones entre ética y política en términos de «inclusión recíproca»

This article first argues that moral philosophy can assist social workers to enrich their reflections on practice and to refine their judgments when choosing their own style of professional action. But this article also maintains that professional codes of conduct do not make an adequate contribution to these aims, and that other benefits generally attributed to such codes, including strengthening of identity and professional prestige, would be better achieved by means of other documents summarizing the dominant political stances of the profession in a given time and place. The theoretical basis for these arguments is provided by Bernard Williams’ criticism of political moralism —understood as the attempt to subordinate politics to moral ends and judgments— and my own proposal of political minimalism, which incorporates an understanding of the relationship between ethics and politics in terms of "reciprocal containment"
