There is a strong controversy when justifying antibiotic prophylaxis in children with recurrent urinary tract infections and vesicoureteral reflux. At the same time, there is a growing interest in the potential health benefits of natural plant components such as polyphenols. Therefore, cranberry has been widely studied and proven as an effective agent in the prevention of recurrent Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). The cranberry contains at least two compounds that have been implicated in its well studied antiadhesion effect. However, it is felt that the real mechanism of action and the metabolites involved remain unclear. With this study, we intend to demonstrate the usefulness of cranberry in a large paediatric population at risk of recurrent UTI, and to understand what it the role of cranberry and its metabolites, specially phenolic acids, in its final outcome.
