Yúmari / Tutuburi: danzar para no morir

Abstract

Los rarámuri, habitantes de la sierra Tarahumara, al norte de México, tienen en su diversidad dancística una de sus más genuinas formas de expresión y comunicación, danza orientada tanto hacia el culto divino como hacia las relaciones humanas. Apoyado en los datos obtenidos durante los once meses de trabajo de campo entre 2001 y 2005 en varias comunidades rarámuris de la Alta y Baja Tarahumara, centraremos aquí la atención en el yúmari / tutuburi, ritual festivo a la vez que modalidad de danza desarrollada en su transcurso. Tras las referencias históricas iniciales, se describe a continuación el proceso festivo en general y la danza en particular identificada como yúmari / tutuburi; para situarnos finalmente en torno al sentido, tanto en un plano funcional como estructural. Con todo ello destacaremos la importancia que esta manifestación cultural posee para seguir siendo rarámuri dentro del contexto actual.

The Rarámuri are people who live in the Tarahumara Mountains, North of Mexico. They held in the diversity of their dance one of their most genuine forms of expression and communication. Their dance is oriented towards divine worship but also towards human relationship. This paper is based on a field work conducted during eleven months between 2001 and 2005 in several Rarámuri communities at the Highland and the Lowland Tarahumara region. The paper focuses the attention on the yúmari / tutuburi, festive ritual, as well as its meaning as a dance. The paper first describes the historical framework of the Rarámuri, second it explains the festival process, with particular attention to the yúmari / tutuburi dance. Finally, the paper explores the functional and structural aspect of the whole ritual. The main target is to outline the importance of this cultural process for being considered a Rarámuri in today’s context.
