Human beings produce their eating habits socially; therefore, like any other human production, they are subject to social change. The essential aim of this article is to approach, from the viewpoint of the sociology of consumption, the changing social circumstances in which these habits are produced, as societies become modernized and globalized. Particularly, this work shows how, in the current situation characterized by a growing influence of worldwide media, both production practices and consumption choices experience trends toward massification and planetary standardization. However, there are different social views on eating and the subsequent choices linked to it; such views correspond with the diversity of ideas about health and the ideal body that people have based on their different socioeconomic positions and trajectories of food socialization.es_ES
