El mito clásico en los historiadores de Indias

Abstract

Las obras de los historiadores de Indias constituyen un vasto corpus de textos de variadas formas literarias. Concluimos afirmando que la función primordial del uso del mito en estos autores, obviando su base erudita, es la comparativa; que el mito es una fábula inferior si se compara con la verdad vista por el historiador, y que las fuentes utilizadas son los autores clásicos, manejados, en el caso de los griegos, en traducciones latinas, y los manuales mitológicos al uso en la época.

The works of the historians of the Indies constitute a vast corpus of texts of various literary forms. This study concludes affirming that the basic function of the use of the classical myth in these authors, obviating its erudite base, is the comparative one; that the myth is a lower fable if compared with the truth seen by the historian, and that the used sources are the classic authors, handled, in the case of the Greeks, in Latin translations, and the mythological manuals in use at the time.
