En torno al Corpus granadino del siglo XVII

Abstract

Basándose en numerosos opúsculos impresos y en la documentación del Archivo del Cabildo catedralicio, se estudian diversos conflictos entre el poder eclesiástico, representado por los Arzobispos, y el civil, encamado en la Real Chancillería. Los problemas habían empezado ya en el siglo XVI, sobre todo en su última década con el inflexible Arzobispo D. Pedro de Castro. Van a continuar durante el XVII, teniendo diversos momentos críticos, como a mediados del siglo con Carrillo y, sobre todo, en 1670 con Escolano. Ambas partes emplean sus peculiares armas: la excomunión los Arzobispos, las multas ejecutivas la Chancillería. Los motivos del enfrentamiento son variados: ejecución de criminales que son eclesiásticos o han sido sacados por la justicia del asilo sagrado. Clérigos que apelan sus causas ante la jurisdicción civil. Cuestiones de etiqueta entre ambos poderes. Sobre todo el nombrado y continuo incidente de la silla del Arzobispo en la procesión del día del Corpus. A comienzos del XVIII, con una nueva dinastía, se pondrá fin a este último problema, con triunfo del Arzobispo.

This article, based on numerous treatises and documents from the Cathedral Archives of Cabildo, studies the various conflicts between ecclesiastic power, represented by the Archbishops, and civil power, embodied in the Royal Chancery. These problems, which had already begun during the 16th Century, were especially prominent in the last decade with the inflexible Archbishop Pedro de Castro. They also continue into the 17th Century, particularly in the 1650’s with Carrillo, and above all in 1670 with Escolano. Both sides use their own particular weapons: the Archbishops, excommunion, and the Chancery, heavy fines. The reasons for this open conflict are many and varied: the execution of criminals who belong to the Church or who have been seized after having been granted sanctuary, priests who plead their cases before civil authorities, and questions of procedure between both powers. In particular, it is necessary to mention the continuous incident of the chair of the Archbishop in the religious procession on the day of Corpus Christi. At the beginning of the 18th Century with the new dynasty, this problem was solved with the triumph of the Archbishop.
