Iglesia y familia en la España del Antiguo Régimen

Abstract

Este artículo examina la influencia de la Iglesia, a través de los tribunales y de la práctica religiosa, en la evolución de la familia nuclear en la España de los siglos XVII y XVIII. Según la tesis tradicional, la Reforma protestante facilitó esta evolución en la Europa del Norte a través de su mayor énfasis en la espiritualidad laica, plasmada en el matrimonio. El examen de las fuentes españolas —autobiografías, tratados morales, archivos diocesanos— permite vislumbrar la coexistencia de dos preocupaciones: la de mantener la paz en el linaje y en la comunidad, y la de fomentar la educación del futuro ciudadano a través del fortalecimiento de la piedad doméstica.

This article examines the influence of the Catholic church, through its lawcourts and religious practices, on the formation of the nuclear family in 17th and 18th century Spain. A traditional argument holds that the Reformation encouraged this development in Northern Europe through its emphasis on the virtues of marriage and household piety. The examination of the Spanish sources —autobiographies, moral guides, church court records— suggests the coexistence of two concerns: to maintain harmony within the kin-group and the community at large, as well as fostering the education of the future citizen through a strengthening of household piety.
