Abstract
Reconociendo de antemano la especificidad de la violencia de género, abordamos en el presente estudio las causas de sevicia y malos tratos presentadas ante el Juzgado Eclesiástico de Toluca en el siglo XVIII, cuyas demandantes son mayoritariamente mujeres. Para ello ha sido necesario detenerse en el papel que desempeñaron tales juzgados en una sociedad que presentaba un alto grado de conflictividad en las familias y en las relaciones de pareja, siendo la violencia de género una de sus manifestaciones más significativas. Se presenta un estudio de los motivos de los pleitos conyugales y de los pasos a seguir en los procesos judiciales incoados. Por último, a través del análisis documental, ha interesado destacar el poder de la denuncia, el discurso socializado de las partes en conflicto y los resultados finales de las causas que podían concluir con un auto de reconciliación o, por el contrario, con la separación de la pareja, ésta como el signo más evidente de la resistencia femenina a esa violencia del patriarcado.
