Abstract
The beginnings of social reform in Spain and the development of social legislation, especially accident laws, created new
areas for medical practice, which involved the renunciation of environmental interventions traditionally claimed by hygienists. The delivery of healthcare to accident victims, their medical/legal assessment, the re-education of the disabled, and medical examinations of workers constituted the main practices of “accident medicine”, the first manifestation of this new speciality. This speciality subsequently expanded by incorporating the experimental sciences, psychology (scientific organisation of work) and a medical-social approach.
