This article deals with the social use of the inquisitorial jurisdiction. The analysis of a series of accusations concerning witchcraft and sorcery coming from the villa of Bilbao in the late 17th and early 18th century, let us analyze how society considered and used the inquisitorial jurisdiction as another way at its disposal for obtaining personal benefits, as well as to determine what the position of the inquisitorial institution was under those circumstances.
