Las premisas epistemológicas y la antropología social

Abstract

Tanto la sociología como la antropología se han enfrentado con problemas ontológicos, epistemológicos y metodológicos similares, procedentes de la aprehensión de su complejo objeto de conocimiento. En términos generales, se han ofrecido dos vías de solución: una objetivista, propugnada por Durkheim, que presupone el carácter fáctico de lo social, y otra nominalista, defendida por Weber y sustentada sobre la teoría de la acción individual. La primera, de índole universalista, tuvo una importante repercusión en los antropólogos más vinculados a la escuela sociológica francesa (Mauss), así como entre los ligados al funcionalismo británico (Malinowski, Radcliffe-Brown y otros) y al estructuralismo (Lévi-Strauss). Progresivamente se producirá un resquebrajamiento del modelo positivista en favor del intepretativista, como se evidencia en Evans-Pritchard. La segunda vía, dominada por el construccionismo y el interpretativismo, ejerció una profunda influencia sobre la antropología simbólica (Turner, Geertz, etc.).

Both sociology and anthropology have faced similar ontological, epistemological, and methodological problems which originating in the apprehension of their complex sphere of knowledge. On the whole, two possible solutions have been offered: on one hand, an objectivist one, advocated by Durkheim, in which the factual character of the social milieu is assumed. On the other hand, a nominalist one is defended by Weber and sustained on the theory of individual action. The objectivist approach, of universalist nature, have had a relevant impact on anthropologists linked to the French sociological school (Mauss), to the British functionalism (Malinowski, Radcliffe-Brown and others), and to structuralism (Lévi-Strauss). However, the positivist model has been gradually replaced by the interpretivist, as becomes evident in the works of Evans-Pritchard. The nominalist approach, dominated by constructionism and interpretivism, has exerted a profound influence on symbolic anthropology (Turner, Geertz, etc.).
