La «religiosidad popular». En torno a un falso problema

Abstract

La voluntad por controlar eclesialmente el conglomerado de mitos, creencias y liturgias fuertemente extrínsecas mediante el que lo social daba a conocer y obedecer sus axiomas, haciéndolos si no homologables cuando menos aceptables para la jerarquía teológica, llevó en su momento al acuñamiento de una categoría de injustificadas pretensiones explicativas: la de «religión» o «religiosidad popular». Que historiadores y antropólogos hayan concedido credibilidad al término y vengan contribuyendo a su reificación ha permitido dotarlo de unos contenidos que lo interesado de su génesis y su fragilidad semántica nunca debieron merecer.

The ecclesiastic will to control the strongly extrinsic conglomerate of myths, beliefs and liturgies by means of which society recognizes and obeys its axioms, making them, if not homologable, at least acceptable for the theological hierarchy, brought in its time the creation of a category of unjustified explanatory pretenses: that of «folk religion» or «popular religiosity». That historians and anthropologists have granted credibility to the term and continue contributing to its reification has allowed it to be endowed with some properties that, because of interests involved in its genesis and its semantic fragility, it never deserved.
