Culminación del curso vital. Para una antropogerontología

Abstract

Del problema de la edad individual se han ocupado tradicionalmente la psicología evolutiva y la antropología psicológica, marcando en menor o mayor grado la impronta de la configuración cultural de cada grado de edad. Hoy, dada la creciente importancia demográfica --y no sólo-- de los ancianos en las sociedades industriales, está aumentando el interés por el estudio de la fase culminatoria del «ciclo vital», desde la gerontología social y desde (si se permite la denominación) la antropogerontología. Se trata de avanzar en una comprensión de la vejez en una perspectiva antropológica compleja, por referencia a la naturaleza humana, a la diversidad de sistemas culturales que la conforman y a la experiencia psicoindividual. ¿Qué modelo antroposocial prevalece en nuestra sociedad, a la hora de afrontar el envejecimiento y dar un sentido a la vida y la muerte?

Traditionally, evolutionary psychology and psychological anthropology have been occupied with the problem of age, defining to a greater or lesser degree the cultural configuration of each stage of maturity. Today, given the growing demographic -and not only demographic- importance of the elderly in industrial societies, interest is increasing for the study of the final phase of the «life cycle», from the social gerontology and (if this denomination is allowed) the anthropo-gerontology perspectives. It is necessary to improve our understanding of age from a complex anthropological perspective, from a framework of human nature, an understanding that encompasses psycho-individual experiences and the systems of diverse cultures. What anthroposocial model prevails in our society when we must confront aging and give meaning to life and death?
