Servir al patrón o al marido. Mujeres con destino a la Ría de Bilbao durante la primera industrialización

Abstract

La formación de las sociedades industriales contemporáneas no pueden entenderse hoy en día sin la presencia de enormes contingentes de inmigrantes que llegaron a las nuevas ciudades para labrarse un futuro laboral y familiar. Dentro de este importante proceso, la participación de las mujeres fue determinante tanto por su volumen, como por su presencia en el mercado laboral -oficial o sumergido-, como por su ayuda a la inserción de sus familias en un nuevo medio hostil. Este artículo pretende rescatar del silencio que la historiografia clásica ha impuesto a las mujeres en su doble condición de inmigrantes y trabajadoras.

The formation of contemporary industrial societies is inextricably linked to the presence of significant numbers of immigrants who arrived in new cities to build a future for themselves and their families. Within this important process, the participation of women was decisive, both because of their numbers and their presence in the labour market – official or informal – and because of their help in integrating their families into a new and hostile environment. The aim of this article is to break the silence that classical historiography has imposed on women in their dual role as immigrants and workers.
